(NSFW) Bakersfield Officer Desperately Attempts To De-escalate Shootout

On June 13th, 2021, an officer from the Bakersfield Police Department engaged in a shootout with a male suspect who had stolen a car. At approximately 4 p.m., a patrolling officer observed a vehicle that had no registration and no license plates. During the traffic stop, the male driver made numerous excuses regarding the unregistered vehicle; in what appears to be a desperate attempt to avoid police confrontation.

Upon returning to his police cruiser, the officer was able to successfully identify the vehicle as a stolen car. With this new information, the officer provided verbal commands to the male suspect to shut the vehicle off. In response, the male suspect fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed, leading the officer on a short pursuit. The vehicle chase concluded after the suspect was involved in a traffic collision on East Brundage Lane.

With his vehicle now disabled, the male suspect exited his vehicle, where he began engaging the officer. The officer returned fire; however he still attempted to de-escalate the situation. Ultimately, the foot chase concluded in a parking lot in the 1400 block on Cottonwood Rd., after the officer shot and neutralized the suspect. Multiple officers arrived on the scene and attempted to de-escalate the situation further; however they were unsuccessful. After nearly five minutes of negotiating, the suspect raised his firearm and pointed his weapon at the officers, forcing a second officer involved shooting.

The 25-year-old male suspect was rendered medical aid and transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Later that evening, the suspect succumbed to his injuries. No officers or civilian personnel were critically injured during this incident.
