(NSFW) Armed Suspect on Rooftop Force Police to Shoot Him

On July 9, 2022, police officers and members of a tactical team from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to a situation where a man was standing on his roof with a handgun.

This is the full critical incident report from the LBPD pertaining to an officer involved shooting that ended with 42-year-old Jaime Fernando Rodriguez dead. The report covers down on the 9-1-1 calls and lengthy police standoff with Rodriguez which ultimately lead to officers deploying less-lethal 40mm bean bag rounds. At one point, in witness recorded footage, Rodriguez can be seen pointing his pistol at police. At that time, officers responded with lethal force. Rodriguez was not immediately incapacitated by the deployment of lethal force however, but refused to disarm himself so that officers could render life-saving aid.

After short period of time, Rodriguez would eventually lose consciousness. The special weapons and tactics team would then employ a police K9 to clear Rodriguez after they got on the roof with him. Once Rodriguez was deemed safe to approach by the K9, the SWAT team would immediately begin rendering life-saving aid to Rodriguez. He would then go on to be reported deceased at the scene of the incident.

No civilians or other officers were injured during the encounter.
