(NSFW) Arizona Cops Shoot Katana-Wielding Suspect

This compilation of security and bodycam footage show deputies in Pima County, Arizona, as they confront and engage a suspect armed with a literal sword. Despite repeated warnings, the suspect charges them with the weapon raised, forcing them to shoot. Viewer’s discretion is advised.

The owner of the hotel at which this incident occurred called in to report a man waving a sword and yelling. Pima County deputies arrive and confront the suspect, later identified as Devon Lewis, 23 years of age. He is shown in possession of a katana, which he holds in front of him.

The internet being what it is, the pop culture reverence for the katana is greatly and often ridiculed, and Lewis’ statements probably don’t do him any favors in that regard. “I am trying to achieve greatness in the katana- is this not allowed in the United States?” However, as easy as it might be to make fun of him, Lewis is clearly in some sort of altered state, stating at 01:50 that he is related to Dionysus, the Greek god of wine.

He draws the sword at 02:05, his sheath clattering to the ground.

In 1612, Japan’s most famous swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, fought Sasaki Kojiro. When Kojiro threw away his sheath, Musashi remarked “You have already lost, for you have no more use for your sheath.” So it is with Lewis. Despite repeated warnings, he charges the officers with the sword, and they open fire.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene, with no other persons injured.
