On September 29th, 2021, at around 9:30 a.m., officers from the Columbus Police Department were involved in a critical incident after receiving a suspicious 911 call. During the initial call, a females voice could be heard shouting, however no one replied to the 911 operator.
After tracing the phone number, the operator notified responding officers that the phone number had multiple counts of domestic violence reports which had occurred weeks prior. Three units were then dispatched to Kimberly Parkway near Eastland Mall, where officers were immediately met by the female victim. Officers were told that a male, later identified as 26-year-old Kyle Anthony Vayon, was inside the home, armed with a large knife. The female victim had also stated, the two were not supposed to be near each other and that Vayon was attempting to kill her.
Vayon eventually exited the residence, where he met multiple officers in the road. As indicated by the footage provided, Vayon was clearly having mental issues at the time, as he repeatedly dragged the edge of his blade across his neck, while requesting the officer to kill him. Shortly after, Vayon then began chasing the female victim around the police cruiser with the large knife. After being unsuccessful, Vayon again approached a responding officer, requesting for the officer to kill him. One officer attempted to use non-lethal, however it was deemed unsuccessful. With Vayon charging, the officer was then forced to use his service weapon.
Officers provided on site medical aid to Vayon, however he was later pronounced deceased. No additional civilians or law enforcement officers were injured during this incident.
