Footage recorded in the mid-2000's shows members of AQIM launching a coordinated assault against a position manned by undertrained Algerian conscripts who have nowhere to go.
If you've ever wondered why supplemental and alternate positions are important in the defense, you're seeing a solid example of it right here. Without supplemental and alternate firing positions, these Algerian conscripts had absolutely no where to go except for their primary fighting position. Even when that position became untenable, they were forced to stay inside of it due to there simply not being anywhere else to maneuver to. Defense-in-depth is incredibly important, so stop complaining when your platoon commander makes you dig a secondary fighting position. It might save your life.
For context, the people fighting in this video are AQIM and Algerian Conscripts. Like most conscripts, the Algerian side of this fight is poorly trained. That doesn't mean they don't have heart or the will to fight however, as shown in this video, they fight until their very last breath. The truly unfortunate part is that if they had secondary positions to maneuver to, they may have been able to fend off this coordinated assault from the extremist AQIM fighters.
