This bodycam footage from Albuquerque Police Department in New Mexico, captures a "blue-on-blue" use of force incident, wherein a police officer shoots one of her partners. Viewer discretion is advised. The officers involved were responding to a domestic violence call, wherein one of the parties was reported to have fired a gun in the air. The suspect, 41 year old Matthew Sanchez, met the officers with a gun in his hand. Despite being told to come out with his hands up, Sanchez continued to close with the officers. The footage is from the perspective of Ofc. Schwarzel, who opened fire along with a partner and killed Sanchez. Although his arm covers his bodycam at the moment it occurs, another officer on-scene, identified as Torres fires her weapon without even looking in the direction it is pointed, nailing Schwarzel in the bicep. At 0:52 from the other effective officer's perspective, Torres can be briefly seen behind Schwarzel before she lights him up. Torres allegedly rendered aid, "worried that she shot him." Although the suspect Sanchez was pronounced dead on-scene, Schwarzel was hospitalized and released the following day, with investigators ruling the incident a clear case of friendly fire. It pains me to end with this statement again, on another Albuquerque Police failure, but we call it like we see it around here. Therefore: Holy shit.
