Around 8 p.m. on July 24th, 2021, officers from the Chandler Police Department responded to the intersection of California and Chicago, Chandler, AZ, for reports of an RV parked in a driveway, where it was reportedly trespassing on a mans private property.
Responding officers arrived in the area shortly after the 911 call, where they parked their cruiser nearly a block away and approached on foot. As they approached the RV, officers made themselves present to the occupant. Seconds later, the officers disperse themselves and take hard cover from the suspect who was reportedly reaching for what appeared to be a firearm.
With the responding officers across the street, they continued to monitor the occupants movement. After about five minutes, the male suspect entered the driver seat of the RV and rammed through a thin fence. While ramming the fence, he attempted to run a responding officer over, but instead slammed into a parked truck. Multiple officers began discharging their service weapons, ultimately striking the male suspect multiple times.
Unfortunately, there is no additional footage of the high speed chase, however official reports from CPD stated; responding officers engaged in a short pursuit with the vehicle, reaching speeds up to 100 mph before crashing into multiple cars parked at a red light. Judging by the images provided, the RV was completely obliterated.
While officers approached the carnage, the male suspect had been critically injured from officer gunshots and additional injuries from the wreck itself. He was later identified as 32-year-old Arnold Serrano. Serrano was transported to a local medical facility, where he was treated and later survived his injuries. Two additional civilians were involved in the wreckage, both of which were last known in critical condition. No officers were injured during this incident.
Police recommended the following charges against Serrano:
Aggravated assault on an officer,
Criminal trespass, criminal damage,
12 counts of aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon,
Unlawful flight from law enforcement,
Failure to stay at an accident.
