Mortar Team Returns Fire After Ambush in Afghanistan

A patrol finds themselves ambushed by the Taliban out in the open. They return fire with small arms, then the mortar team gets their gun in the fight.

When it came to fighting coalition troops in Afghanistan, the Taliban had to quickly learn that they couldn't have a stand-up fight. In almost all departments they were out-gunned, out-trained, and un-equipped to match coalition forces. That's why videos like this one exist.

In Operation Enduring Freedom, it was not uncommon for a group of Taliban fighters to ambush a coalition patrol, only to quickly learn that the patrol was carrying powerful crew served weapons. Generally speaking, as soon as those crew served weapons with the dismounted patrol started returning accurate fire on their position, they would be forced to beat feet out of the area. If for some reason the Taliban did however stick around to fight with the superior weapon systems of coalition forces, they would often find themselves in the middle of the combined arms conundrum, which would quickly result in them being killed by machine gun fire, mortars, artillery, air, or just plain old infantry fire and maneuver.
