Missile Strikes Russian Black Sea Oil Rig 70km From Crimea

Footage released by the Ukrainian Government shows a missile strike against a Russian owned Oil Rig operating in the Black Sea. According to reports from NASA, the fire from this platform could be seen from space two days after the strike occurred.

This strike was part of a strike package that occurred last Monday on July 4, 2022 in which three Russian owned Oil Rigs in the Black Sea were hit by Ukrainian missiles. This is the first time in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in which Russian infrastructure in the Black Sea has been attacked by Ukrainian Forces, and the platform seen in this video is approximately 70km from Russian controlled Crimea.

Olga Kovitidi, the Senator for Crimea, said that the pipelines from the platforms are currently being drained to minimize the risk of fire and that production at the Odessa gas field is currently suspended as a result of these strikes. Three oil field workers were seriously injured in the attacks and several more are currently listed as missing.

According to Sergiy Bratchuk from Odessa's regional military administration, these rigs were legitimate military targets as they were being utilized heavily by the Russian military. "On those towers, Russia had organized small garrisons and stored equipment for air defense, radar warfare and reconnaissance," Bratchuk told an online briefing last Tuesday.
