On November 11th, 2020, officers assigned to the Winchester Police Department (WPD) were dispatched to the 2400 block of Massanutten Terrace just after 0700 hours. Earlier that morning, a 9-1-1 caller reported his neighbor, identified as 52-year-old Eric Clark, was outside smashing his car with a sledgehammer.
When officers arrived on scene, Clark exited his apartment with a rifle and fired several shots at them. During the confrontation, a female officer can be heard over radio communication, that she was stuck in the car and didn't see any opportunity to maneuver her police cruiser to safety.
During that time, a WPD officer was able to maneuver around a neighboring apartment, achieving a better line of sight on Clark. While in position, the officer returned fire with his patrol rifle, striking Clark, and neutralizing him. Officers rendered lifesaving medical aid to Clark, however he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during this incident.
