Body camera footage released from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, shows the moments an assault suspect slips out of his restraints, brutally attacks a female officer, and forces a secondary officer to use lethal force.
On December 7th, 2021, Bernalillo County Dispatch received a call at 8:15 pm from Albuquerque Police Dispatch regarding a domestic violence incident that occurred near Coors and Blake SW. Deputies were dispatched to 6200 Montano Plaza NW at 9:00 pm to speak with the victim.
During the investigation, deputies determined a battery had occurred. While speaking with the victim, the offender of the battery arrived on the scene. The offender was handcuffed and escorted to a deputy’s vehicle, where he was able to remove one hand from the cuffs and attempted to flee.
As deputies pursued him, the offender was physically combative and refused to comply with commands. During a physical fight, the offender was holding a female deputy down refusing to let go. When the deputy indicates the suspect has her gun, the additional deputy fired two rounds, killing the suspect.
The suspect was later identified as Mario Diaz, a 41-year-old male, and resident of Albuquerque.
