On May 4, 2021 Officers of the Mesquite Police Department, Texas responded to the Audubon Park Apartments after a single domestic violence report had come through dispatch. During the 911 call, dispatch reported the sounds of a struggle occurring. Moments before the call hung up a woman can be heard screaming "please don't take my son" and "please don't hit me".
Dispatchers then escalated the situation by locating the phone calls whereabout and dispatched local Officers to the area. Once Officers arrived, they knocked on the door of local residents. The first door Officers knocked on was answered by the suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Ashton Pinke. Pinke was not aggressive toward the Officers, but was not cooperative.
Moments later, Pinke slammed the door in the Officers face. As the responding Officers continued to knock on the door of the apartment, Pinke refused to further cooperate. A few minutes later, a woman had exited the apartment with her child telling Officers "He is running" and that he had been assaulting her inside the apartment.
Officers move to the side of the apartment, when Pinke is spotted with a knife in his hand on the second floor balcony. Reports state that Pinke then leaped from the second story of the balcony saying "Shoot me, shoot me" to the Officers. Hidden from the footage, Pinke was now on the ground.
Officers shout "Don't do it" multiple times before Pinke began charging at them with a knife. To stop the suspect, Officers then took multiple shots, ultimately dropping Pinke to the ground. A knife can be seen falling from Pinke's right hand as he rolled over.
Pinke was treated on the scene for his gunshot wounds, but would later succumb to his injuries.
