On April 27, 2021, an officer involved shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Feliz drive, Bakersfield, CA.
Officers of the Bakersfield Police Department were dispatched on a reported stolen vehicle on Highway 58, where a high speed chase took place after officers attempted to pull the vehicle over. The suspect, exited Highway 58 where he would later crash his vehicle and flee the scene on foot.
After a short while, officers located the suspect jumping fences in the backyards of Feliz drive residents, when a K-9 named "Jango" attempted to subdue the suspect. As Jango approached the suspect, three shots can be heard ringing off. The suspect inflicted multiple gunshot wounds to Jango moments before officers could get a line of sight on the suspect.
The K-9 handler proceeded to fire multiple shots into the suspect, finally subduing him. Officers provided medical aid to the suspect until medical transport arrived, but was pronounced dead on the scene. As for Jango, he was taken to a local emergency veterinarian where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Jango was born in the Netherlands in 2015, and responded to Czech commands given by his handler. In 2017, Jango was assigned to his first handler and best friend, Officer Brock Mueller of the BPD. Although his career was cut short, Jango faithfully served as the community of Bakersfield suspect apprehension and explosive materials K-9.
