Iran Launches Ballistic Missiles At Israel, 13 April 2024

This civilian-captured video shows the launch of the ballistic missiles by Iran against Israel on 13 April 2024. Four missiles are shown being launched of an approximate 110-120 that were reported launched. Ultimately, nearly all were shot down by US/Allied and Israeli defense systems.

I’ve been privileged enough to see a few rocket launches live, both at around the same distance and closer than this civilian onlooker. A civilian satellite or exploration launch uses the same technology and properties as an ICBM- NASA’s rocket program was built on the shoulders of Germany’s V2 rockets. Therefore, for good or for ill, rocket launches have a certain same awe-inspiring beauty about them as the very air thrums and a man-made star, the work of hundreds, possibly thousands, ascends.

The same technology allows us to share the internet or know where we are via satellite. As a species, we can better understand our place in the universe. Or, we can level city blocks on the other side of the planet. While I understand the necessity, the fact that there continue to be reasons to choose the latter is always a little disheartening. Fortunately, most of the munitions launched from Iran were destroyed in-flight, and were probably never intended or expected to actually complete their flights. Given the lead time between launch in Iran and arrival in Israel, which gave Israel ample time to prepare, it’s likely that Iran did this as a satisfaction of honor and little else.
