This footage, provided by a Houthi media outlet, shows both a naked-eye and thermal view of what is purported to be a US MQ-9 “Reaper” drone. The video then shows some of the drone’s wreckage, in order to substantiate the claim. This shootdown was reported by Houthi spokespersons to have occurred on Thursday, 25 April, 2024.
This incident is the latest in a series of reported MQ-9 shootdowns over time, with the last occurring approximately two months ago. It is reported that the Houthis likely used a “358” loitering surface-to-air missile.Like many weapons used by terrorist organizations, the 358 is allegedly made by Iran, using commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) components, purchased via shell companies. While many of the 358s have been captured by Naval forces involved with the UN embargo on Yemen, there are obviously still missiles making it through to the terrorist organizations. In addition to the Houthi rebels in Yemen, Hezbollah has also reportedly uses the 358 against Israeli drones.
