Members of a Ukrainian unit hammer Russian Separatist positions with an SPG-9 recoilless rifle while conducting trench warfare operations. Everything is captured on a helmet-mounted camera.
Trench warfare is one of those things we don't really talk about too much anymore. When you think trench warfare, you're instantly pushed back over a century into the first World War, where modern warfare was in its absolute infancy. No one knew how to maneuver around belt-fed machine guns. No one knew how to properly utilize armor. No one truly understood how modern weapons were going to impact the battlefield.
Since then, war has evolved a lot. It's not often that we get to see trench warfare performed anymore. The tactics, techniques, and procedures of war have evolved so much since the early days of World War 1, that it simply makes more sense to wait for armor, air, and arty to come in and give you cover before you maneuver. That's why this video is so interesting to me.
For all intents and purposes, we're watching two modern military powers fight each other with conventional weapon systems. What's missing though? Armor, air, and artillery. Because those three key components of modern warfare are missing, we get to watch the two groups duke it out from entrenched positions with all of the modern devices of armed conflict.
