An incredible spectacle was filmed as a supposed gas or oil leak resulted in a massive swirling inferno in the Gulf of Mexico.
The incident occurred at a Pemex offshore oil rig, although Mexican authorities claim no oil was spilled into the Gulf. Company vessels reportedly used nitrogen to control the blaze. The blaze began around 5:15 a.m. following a gas leak in its 12-inch submarine pipeline. It took several hours to extinguish the inferno. "Electrical storms and heavy rains" played a role in the incident, but it's not clear how the leak started.
