A video from November 2022 is now circulating on social media falsely claiming to show the Jun. 6, 2023 destruction of the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric dam which has resulted in severe flooding in the Kherson region.
We initially blogged this CCTV footage when it first happened, and it was believed to be the responsibility of Russian saboteurs.
Months before the November 2022 blast at the dam, the Ukrainian military carried out a HIMARS strike on the dam to keep Russian forces from using it as a crossing point.
While Ukraine and Russia are currently blaming each other for destroying the dam, it is possible that the dam succumbed to damage from one or both of the previous strikes. It's unclear how much regular maintenance the dam received while under control of Russian occupying forces.
