Stock footage from atom bomb testing is some of the coolest footage that exists out there. While I hope to personally never see it in real life, footage like this really puts atomic and nuclear warfare into perspective.
Mutually assured destruction was the name of the game throughout the Cold War. The entire premise was that if one side used atomic or nuclear weapons, the other side would as well to ensure the destruction of both parties outright. It seems like an absolutely crazy thought process, and maybe that is why the acronym for that type of warfare was simply called MAD.
Regardless, here's about a minute and thirty seconds of footage taken during an atom bomb test. The type of weapon used was fired from an artillery cannon, 280mm to be more specific. The cannon had the monicker "Atomic Annie," and this specific test footage was recorded somewhere around 1953 at the Nevada Test Site in the United States.
