A tragic event that occurred on October 16th, 2021, left an uninvolved driver deceased, after a drunk driver led Salt Lake Police officers on a high speed chase through a residential area.
At around 1200 hours, dispatch received multiple calls regarding a drunk driver in the Davis County area. Shortly after the calls came through, A North Salt Lake Police officer intercepted the Ford pick-up truck on Highway 89, where he attempted a traffic stop.
As shown in the dashcam footage, the officer approached the truck at a red light. The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Christian Facer, began speeding away causing the officer to pursue in a high speed chase. The truck led the pursuing officer onto I-15 for a few miles before exiting an off ramp into a residential area.
The video shows the fleeing truck drive into oncoming traffic on 1200 West to pass a vehicle. Shortly after, a police supervisor can be heard over the radio telling the officer to terminate the pursuit if the driver goes into oncoming lanes or is reckless.
Approximately thirty-seconds after the termination call came through, Facer sped through a stop sign intersection and struck an SUV driven by Thy Vu Mims. Unfortunately, Mims injuries sustained were fatal and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Facer was booked into jail earlier this week on multiple charges, including automobile homicide. Prosecutors are reviewing the case against him and criminal charges have not yet been filed.
