Footage recorded in 2020 by a public affairs officer aboard the CGC Kimball captures the moment the watchmen in charge of protecting their fellow Coast Guardsmen during a Cutter swim call are forced to engage with an 8 ft shark using small arms fire. The shark was identified as either a longfin mako or pelagic thresher shark, and it was not injured by the Guardsmen who engaged to protect his fellow coast guardsmen.
We are publishing this older footage now because it is currently circulating as if it is a brand new event that just occurred. The incident happened in 2020 and is not something new or noteworthy.
