Body worn camera footage shows a Chilean Carabinero take a blast of buckshot to the chest during a firefight with Mapuche guerrillas.
Although it is reported that the tactical police officer was hit by opposing forces, the possibility of a ricochet from his own shot cannot be ruled out based on the footage. The camera continues rolling and documents his evacuation and early treatment for his wounds.
The conflict between government forces and the indigenous Mapuche people stems back to Chile's restructuring of government and transition to democracy in the 1990's. The ethnic Mapuche believe they have been forced out of their ancestral homes and land to which they claim inherent rights. The Mapuche activists have carried out arson against farms and forests and violent occupations of properties in protest.
