US counter rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) defense were activated on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022 as the US Embassy in Baghdad was targeted by four rockets.
Three of the rockets fell within the perimeter of the US Embassy and the fourth struck a nearby school, injuring a woman and a child. No reports of US injuries were made.
No entity has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the rocket operation matches the modus operandi of Shia militants armed and equipped by the Iranian Quds Force. US installations in Iraq and Syria have seen a significant increase in hostilities over the last two weeks as Iran attempts to seek revenge on the two-year anniversary of the US drone strike that killed IIRGC Gen. Soleimani.
The US Embassy in Baghdad put out a statement claiming the attack was carried out by, “...terrorist groups attempting to undermine Iraq’s security, sovereignty, and international relations.”
