US air defense shot down two Iranian loiter munitions, also called suicide drones and kamikaze drones, over Ain al-Asad air base, west of Baghdad on Tuesday Jan. 4, 2021.
A thermal-imaging camera recorded the incident and appears to show two different air defense systems defeating the Iranian drone attack. The first clip appears to show some sort of single explosive projectile intercepting and exploding in close proximity to the incoming enemy loiter munition. The blast causes the kamikaze drone to malfunction and crash.
The second clip shows the C-RAM (Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar) defense system ripping the suicide drone out of the sky with a magnificent burst of cyclic fire.
Tuesday's attack was the second loiter munition attack in a two-day period. Iran is likely making a statement on the two-year anniversary of the US military's assassination of IIRGC Quds Force commander Gen. Soleimani, who was killed in a drone strike on January 3, 2020 near Baghdad International Airport (BIAP).
