This footage, courtesy of "Diego", a Brazilian Volunteer in the International Legion, is not an amazing clip of combat footage. It's soldiers, on the line, talking as night draws in on the Kreminna Forest, as soldiers have done since time immemorial. This is especially poignant as Veterans'/Armistice Day was this week. As it gets dark and the forest literally echoes with hostility, nervousness creeps into their voices. An American or perhaps Canadian combats it by joking, pretending to taunt the enemy before moving down the line. Humor as a way to offset fear is another common trait of soldiers that these guys and sentries on Hadrian's Wall would have in common. Sometimes bravery is storming an enemy position, and sometimes it's staying in yours despite the sum total of your instincts and your ancestors screaming in the back of your mind that being in an ancient forest at night is a really, really bad idea. And that's before you add in the gunfire.
