Fremont Police Department and the California Highway Patrol released a video showing the deadly Mar. 24, 2021 officer-involved-shooting between a a traffic enforcement motorcycle officer and an armed felon suspected of vehicle theft and armed robbery.
According to the reports, Officer Burch was notified that a license plate reading camera had identified a vehicle that was both reported as stolen and matched the description of a vehicle used in an armed robbery in San Francisco. Officer Burch was able to locate the vehicle and gave pursuit.
During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle lost control and struck other vehicles, causing it to be disabled. The suspect abruptly stopped and exited the vehicle. He charged the officer, firing at him with a handgun. Officer Burch bailed from his motorcycle to find cover in the ditch and unholstered his own weapon. At that point, the suspect was straddling the patrol bike, but it's unclear if he was attempting to make an escape on the bike or retrieve the officer's patrol carbine.
Officer Burch opened fire on the suspect, hitting him at least once and neutralizing the threat. The suspect, later identified as Joshua Gloria, 34, of Oakland, died at the scene. Unknown to the officer at the time of the shooting, Gloria was already a convicted felon and had active warrants for attempted homicide and felony in possession of a firearm.
