The Biden Admin has reportedly suggested that Ukraine cede the eastern part of their country to Russia in an attempt to keep the peace between the two nations. It is unlikely that Ukraine will agree to this.
Since 2014, the Ukrainian military has been fighting a nearly non-stop battle with Russian separatists in the eastern portion of their country. In all of that time, never once has the Ukrainian government given any indication that they would be willing to give up a large portion of their country over to the demands of the Separatists who wish to join with Russia. Now, as Russia has amassed over 100,000 professional Russian Soldiers on the border of Ukraine, Biden is suggesting the Ukrainians simply surrender that portion of the country to try and prevent an all-out-war in the region.
The Biden administration has already stated that U.S. ground troops coming to the aid of Ukraine is off the table in a statement to the press. “We have a moral obligation and a legal obligation to our NATO allies if they were to attack under Article 5, it’s a sacred obligation,” Biden said. “That obligation does not extend to NATO – I mean to Ukraine. But it would depend upon what rest of the NATO countries were willing to do as well. But the idea that the United States is going to unilaterally use force to confront Russia invading Ukraine is not on, in the cards right now. What will happen is there will be severe consequences.” Anyone else getting Obama's Red Line, vibes from that statement?
Already emboldened by a weakened and divided United States, Russia is seizing on their opportunity at a land grab. Without support from the United States, it's unlikely that NATO will do much of anything to come to the aid of Ukraine, leaving them standing alone against the full might of the Russian Military should Putin decide to pull the trigger. While this is happening, even further fears continue to arise that China could invade Taiwan at the same time. It is unclear if any contingencies have been put in place to stop either of these actions from occurring, however it is unlikely that anything could be done to stop either country.
In a phone call with Putin on Thursday, Biden allegedly made it perfectly clear that should Russia start a full scale invasion of Ukraine, there would be financial sanctions put in place as consequences. I'm sure Putin was shaking in his boots at the thought of the United States cancelling him on Twitter and making McDonalds pull out of the country.
