On May 24, 2021, Austin police officers were dispatched to an apartment building, where reports had stated a vehicle was on fire with a male inside of it.
As the officers arrived on the scene, the vehicle had already become engulfed in flames, due to the tires spinning for an extended period of time. Authorities later stated, the man had a medical emergency occur as he was backing his truck into the parking spot. While backing up, the man lost feeling in his legs which kept him from taking his foot off the accelerator.
With his foot stuck on the accelerator, the wheels began spinning in place at a high rate of speed, causing the tires and rear end of the vehicle to ignite. Taking it upon themselves, the officers grabbed a fire extinguisher and attempted to put the fire out before firefighters arrived.
In a desperate attempt to save the man, the officer grabbed the scalding hot door and tried to open it. Being unsuccessful in opening the door, the officer then began smashing out the driver side window, reaching in and then unlocking the door. The two officers then dragged the male out of the vehicle, saving his life.
Both officers began providing aid to the male subject until medical transport arrived. The man had serious, potentially life-threatening smoke inhalation injuries.
