Army Will Make COVID Vaccines Mandatory In September

The Department of the Army Headquarters sent out a directive telling commands to prepare for mandatory COVID vaccinations as early as September 2021, according to the Army Times.

“Commanders will continue COVID-19 vaccination operations and prepare for a directive to mandate COVID-19 vaccination for service members [on or around] 01 September 2021, pending full FDA licensure ... Commands will be prepared to provide a backbrief on servicemember vaccination status and way ahead for completion once the vaccine is mandated.”

The order suggests the Army believes the vaccines will be fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by that time. As of now, the vaccines are only approved for emergency use, so receiving it is "optional" for the troops, although many units are using group punishment and other measures to press their personnel into getting the vaccine.

The Navy also warned of an eventual vaccination mandate, even though they have the highest vaccination rate of all branches. So far, the Pentagon has not put out any hints of a service-wide vaccination mandate for a September timeframe.
