On March 31, 2021 Officers of the Rock Island Police Department, IL were investigating the suspect identified as Deshawn Tatum for brandishing a firearm he was illegally in possession of on social media.
Rock Island police were persistent in finding Tatum due to two outstanding warrants, one federal felony warrant for possession of a firearm, and the other being a county warrant for criminal damage to property and fleeing & eluding.
On April 1, 2021 Officers located Tatum at the Chippiannock Cemetery, where he was spotted with a group of people. As Officers approached Tatum, he began running through back alleys and backyards in an attempt to flee Officers yet again. Knowing Tatum was armed, Officers yelled numerous times "Drop the gun" in an attempt to have him comply.
Tatum led Officers to the Chicken Shack gas station where Tatum can be seen shoving an innocent by-stander out of his car. Two Officers attempt to remove Tatum and his firearm from the drivers seat of the vehicle. Moments later Tatum floors the gas pedal in reverse, "clothes-lining" the two Officers with the car door. The additional Officers on the scene began firing at Tatum who had now slammed the vehicle into the side of the gas station.
Officers removed the firearm from Tatum's possession and began conducting CPR until medical transport arrived on the scene. Tatum was transported to Unity Point Health where he was later pronounced dead.
