Video reportedly filmed on Jun. 24, 2021 shows an Afghan military helicopter flying over a village in Faryab province along the border with Turkmenistan when it comes under heavy fire from Taliban ground forces.
The sound of automatic gunfire can be heard cracking over the helo's rotarwash, indicating very accurate fire. The pilot banks to get out of range of the hostile fire before making another loop to identify the source location.
The Afghan military is crumbling rapidly as the US and NATO allies withdraw from the nation. The security situation is not only dire for Afghanistan, but for the nation's around it as well. As evidenced by the video, the Taliban are operating openly along the Turkmen border. Earlier this week, the Taliban captured the main border crossing into Tajikistan. Videos circulating on social media show Iran moving heavily armored military vehicles toward their border with Afghanistan. Afghan National Army soldiers have been surrendering in droves, handing the Taliban an entire Army's worth of weapons, ammunition, equipment, and vehicles.
Although most of the US forces are expected to be out of Afghanistan by early July, Biden announced he will be leaving several hundred troops in country to protect diplomats as well as the Kabul airport, while Turkey devises an American-funded security plan for the airport.
