An officer involved shooting that occurred on November 19, 2019 in Des Plaines, Illinois, left an armed robber dead, along with a police officer and a 15-year-old male critically injured.

On the evening of November 19, 2019, Des Plaines officers were dispatched on a reported armed robbery at a Des Plaines bank. Upon arriving on the scene, eye witnesses informed officers the armed robber had car jacked someone, utilizing the vehicle to evade police.

While being pursued by multiple police agencies, the suspect who was later identified as 32-year-old Christopher Willis, later ditched the vehicle and began fleeing on foot. While exiting the vehicle, Willis took multiple shots at a responding officer, striking him in the head.

The surveillance footage provided displays the very moments Willis ditched the stolen vehicle and entered Upbeat Music and Arts, a music school in the Northwest Side. Seconds after entering the school, officers trailing close behind entered and began opening fire. Caught in the middle of cross fire, a 15-year-old intern at the music school was struck by the officers gun fire, along with Willis. Willis was critically wounded and later pronounced deceased at the scene.

As for the 15-year-old musician, his dreams were unfortunately shattered. While the officer entered the tight corridor, Willis began running down a narrow hallway, still armed with a hand gun. Confused at what was happening, the teenager attempted to get out of the way, but was unsuccessful. The teenager had been struck by the officers long service rifle in the arm, which penetrated through into his abdomen. After nearly twenty surgeries, the teenager has still not fully recovered and has limited mobility in his arm. As for the officer who was shot, he later survived his injuries and is also facing a long road to recovery.

Nearly two years later, August 4, 2021, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx won't file criminal charges against a suburban Chicago police officer who accidentally shot a teenager during the shootout with Willis. In response to the decision, Des Plaines Chief of Police David Anderson stated "Officer Armstrong acted heroically to stop an active shooter who had just committed multiple forceable felonies and shot a Chicago Police officer prior to entering the music school"
