Chilean Police officers began engaging a 17-year-old car thief with their service weapons, after the suspect refused to exit a stolen vehicle. Helmet camera footage from the responding Chilean officer, provides us with a first person perspective of the incident unfolding.
The footage begins with the officer tracking down the suspect in highly condensed traffic. Traveling at a high rate of speed, the officer locates the 17-year-old suspect. As the officer approaches the driver side door, he is met with an additional responding officer. Both officers, now with weapons drawn, begin shouting at the driver, presumably requesting the driver to exit the vehicle.
Refusing to follow the officers orders, the suspect begins flooring the gas pedal, slamming into multiple vehicles as he attempts to escape police custody. As the driver begins fleeing, both responding officers begin opening fire, striking the vehicle through the rear window. The vehicle, continuing to weave in and out of traffic eventually crawls the a halt, after the driver is struck by the officer gun fire.
Upon reaching the vehicle, the suspect was evaluated and can be seen to have numerous gunshot wounds, including one to the back of the head. Reportedly, the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he died two days later. Although this was a high risk situation due to the congestion of the area, police officials defended the officers lethal force in this situation. In addition, police officials made a statement that the suspect not only stole the vehicle, but had also ran a victim over, and may have injured or killed others with his reckless behavior.
